This forum post is a sort of survey. My boat, Walkabout CD28 Hull 153 has a TAMD41A (mostly rebuilt and up-dated) and I have been running an 18 by 18 four blade Michigan Wheel. The CD28 manual says that the original prop was an 18 b18 four blade but I think that when the boat is heavily loaded, it may be a bit too much prop and I am thinking about dropping the pitch to 16.

Question for CD28 owners with the TAMD41 diesel, 200 hp, and maybe the 165 hp. What diameter, pitch and type of prop are you using and any comments re performance, over loading, etc.?

Bill

Hi Bill,
I have the TAMD40B (165hp).

My prop was 18x18 when I got the boat, and seemed quite a bit overloaded. I had it repitched to 18 x 16, and it's much better. Smoke is greatly reduced, though I also lost a bit off my cruising speed.

Hi Bill:

Brandywine has the TAMD41B (200hp) engine. She originally came with an 18x18 three blade prop. As part of my attempts to reduce the smoke and soot generated by the engine, I change the prop to a 16" pitch. While the smoke was greatly reduced, the cruising speed dropped a bit. Currently I get 8-9 knots at 2500 RPM and 10 - 11 knots at 3200 RPM. She will top out at 13-14 knots at 3850 - 3900 RPM. With the 18x18 prop WOT was only about 3600 RPM which led me to believe that the pitch was not correct. I had a discussion with Clive Dent about this situation back in 2002. He indicated that the load on the boat would probably make a difference. The 18 x18 would be fine on a stock boat. However, once you load her up with lots of stuff for long range cruising (in my case: generator, outboard, sailing dinghy on davits, bicycle, extra house batteries, air conditioners, spare prop and parts, electronics, etc) you've increased the displacement of the vessel. I'm always amazed each Fall when I completely empty the boat for winter haul and store how far she comes up out of the water.

I think it also depends on how you run the boat. If you run mostly at displacement speeds of 8-9 knots, your prop is fine. However, if you run at semi-displacement speeds (12-14 knots), the prop would be different. You should see how fast Whiteout travels with her Yanmar engine. She leaves all of us way behind with no smoke or soot! I'm not sure what she is turning for a prop.

Hope to see you on Chesapeake this year before you head north or south for more adventures.

Keep in touch,

Mark
