I wanted to share the solution to an excessive smoke and soot issue on the TAMD41B that I've been working on for the last four years. I've been through several mechanics, thousands of dollars, and much frustration attempting to solve this issue. As is the case with many issues, it was a quick five minute fix, once we determined the cause. The fuel injection pump has a little valve that is supposed to open to increase the fuel flow when the turbo is engaged. It is spring operated based on the pressure in the intake manifold. We discovered that this valve was stuck open which sent extra fuel to the injectors all the time. Once it was freed, the engine runs just fine. In addition, the fuel consumption has dramatically dropped.

If you are experiecing this issue, I would recommend you ask your mechanic to check the value. Warning: Apparently it is a very sensitive and Volvo-Penta does not recommend accessing it. I would recommend you only have a trained Volvo-Penta mechanic perform this check.

If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact me.

Thanks, Mark

Mark,
Congratulations on getting that resolved after such a long battle. Was your smoke/soot problem present at all RPMs (i.e., regardless of the load placed on the engine)? I have a TAMD40B, and get some heavy black smoke during acceleration. Once at cruise it clears up, but I'm not reaching rated RPM at wide-open, either. I think I'll be adjusting the prop after haul out in November.

We should plan a raft up on the bay.

Joe

Joe:

The smoke and soot was present at all RPMs. We suspect there was a significant build-up at lower RPM's when the valve should have been closed. A puff of smoke upon initial acceleration is perfectly normal. It should just last a moment or so. I would check the prop spec to be sure you are reaching WOT.

Let's plan to meet on the Bay soon... in fact, I was thinking about sending a message out to all of the owners in the mid-Bay area to see if we could all get together one evening.

All the best, Mark

Hello...at last I may have found the reason. My port engine smokes tto and after being through everything as to why this happens you might have a t last pointed me in the right direction. Where is this lever on thepump please?
I have TAMD41B 200hp x 2 fitted to my Princess. We have looked at injectors, compressions, intercoolers etc, none of which have solved teh issue.
ANyone else got any ideas??

Have your mechanic check the valve on top of the injector pump. It has a small hose that leads from the air manifold. This should only open and allow more fuel into the engine when there is high air pressure in the manifold. It very often can get stuck open causing more extra unburned fuel to be sent to through the injectors. This results in both smoke, soot and a sheen of fuel out of the exhaust when you start the engine.
